Every plush product that embraces your hands comes from Egypt and was handpicked by Egyptian cotton farmers. We’ve got your linens and towels fully stacked, so we're gonna tell you just how Egyptian cotton came to be. 

Historically speaking, cotton had been grown in Egypt for thousands of years. In the early 1800s, a frenchman named Jumel collected and experimented with various samples of cotton and eventually created luxurious, long-staple cotton with long fibers and silky, durable fabric. Of course, Egypt’s rulers had their eye on cotton and couldn’t take their hands off the silky smooth fabric. And really, we don't blame them at all. 

Jumel had convinced Muhammad Ali, the head of state of Egypt, to try a piece of cotton from his demonstrable findings.  Ali was amazed by the unique features of Egyptian cotton (longevity and remarkable feel). So, then, he asked for cotton crops to be cultivated in many key regions of Egypt. 

Egypt’s unique climate became the catalyst that helped Jumel cultivate the first Egyptian cotton, which people revered for its flexible and long-lasting fibers. 

Cotton crops soon became a booming and thriving economy in Egypt. 

Nearly 40 years later, the American civil war drove Europeans to find another source for cotton. This resulted in demand and prices to rise worldwide, which firmly placed luxurious Egyptian cotton at the top.

By the early 1960s, Egyptian cotton accounted for roughly 10% of global exports, and throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, Egypt regularly produced more than half a million tons of cotton a year (that's a lot of cotton).

In recent years, however, the historical crop plummeted (which was a real bummer because it temporarily dried out all the supernatural craze over Egyptian cotton).  In 2016, total cotton production hit an almost 100-year-low for Egypt. Many reasons attributed to this fall include mismanagement of seeds, mislabeling by large retailers and suppliers, and the accumulation of debt to foreign banks. There was also the Welspun scandal which might have deterred and made consumers wary of purchasing Egyptian cotton. 

Though it’s had both a soft and dry journey, Egyptian cotton still remains the unique choice for soft, non-abrasive fibers that hug the skin. And, our commitment to ethically sourced, Egyptian cotton remains. There are still some brands that may state they contain “100% Egyptian cotton,” when in reality, they might be mixed in with other materials without a proper disclaimer, according to this Guardian article.
